The Federal Ministry of Works has dismissed reports of structural defects on the Oju-Ore Bridge in Ota, Ogun State, saying the bridge passed integrity tests and remains structurally stable.
The ministry gave the assurance after a technical inspection led by the Director of Bridges, Highways and Road Designs, Engr. Musa Saidu, following concerns raised on social media about the project.
Saidu said the assessment confirmed that the bridge was built in line with approved engineering standards and specifications.
He cautioned against relying on photographs and videos circulating online to determine the safety of major infrastructure, stressing that structural assessments should be based on scientific and engineering tests.
According to him, the contractor, Laralek Construction Company, had delivered satisfactory work, while minor finishing issues identified during the inspection would be addressed before completion.
Saidu also noted that heavy-duty vehicles had already used the bridge, describing this as an indication of its structural capacity, although construction was not yet complete.
He warned residents and traders against operating or loitering beneath the bridge while construction activities continued, citing safety risks.
Representing the contractor, Tope Ojo said the bridge’s major components, including spans, bearings, beams and piers, were executed according to approved designs and government specifications.
Ojo said independent consultants conducted the required integrity tests and that their results confirmed compliance with engineering standards.
He added that officials of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) had also carried out an on-site technical assessment of the structure.
A member of the Oju-Ore Stakeholders Council, Comrade Akomolafe Zubair, welcomed the inspection, saying it would help restore confidence among residents and motorists.
He urged road users to remain patient as the remaining works are completed, expressing optimism that the bridge would soon be fully opened to traffic.
