The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) says it plans to establish between 50 and 70 smart, self-service energy stations across Nigeria within the next six months.

The company said the initiative is aimed at transforming conventional filling stations into modern energy and mobility hubs offering petrol, electric vehicle (EV) charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and other services.

Speaking in Abuja during the commissioning of a technology-driven smart station, NNPC’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the facility was the first of several planned across the country.

Dagazau said the new stations would integrate petrol, gas and electricity while allowing customers to dispense fuel themselves, including during nighttime operations.

He also dismissed concerns that automation and self-service operations would result in job losses, saying the facilities would require workers to manage technology, EV charging and other services.

According to him, the energy hubs could ultimately create more employment opportunities than conventional filling stations.

The Abuja facility is equipped with fast EV chargers capable of charging vehicles in about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the vehicle and battery capacity.

NNPC said it also plans to modernise its existing retail outlets as part of its broader effort to improve customer experience.

The Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said the Abuja station has a storage capacity of 180,000 litres of PMS and 45,000 litres of AGO.

He said the facility has 16 PMS pumps, two AGO pumps and six EV charging points, while its operations are powered entirely by a solar system with a capacity exceeding 200 kilowatts.

The station is also expected to feature a quick-service restaurant, coffee shop, automated car wash and modern service bay. LPG dispensing is being incorporated, while plans are underway for CNG dispensing and a conversion centre.

Baba-Kukawa said the station would operate 24 hours and allow customers to pay through the NNPC Retail mobile application before dispensing the exact quantity of fuel purchased.

He, however, said staff would remain available to assist customers who were unable to use the digital self-service system.

The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, said the initiative was driven by changes in the downstream petroleum sector following deregulation and the commencement of operations at the Dangote Refinery.

Stokman said consumers were increasingly demanding quality products, competitive prices, faster services, digital payment options and alternative energy solutions such as EV charging and CNG.

He added that NNPC Retail would continue investing in technology, partnerships and sustainable energy solutions to meet changing consumer needs.
