The Nigerian Union in South Africa has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the death of 34-year-old Nigerian Christian Hilary Nnaemeka in Johannesburg.
NUSA said Nnaemeka was allegedly attacked around 8pm on Monday near Willow and Filbert Streets in Primrose, Johannesburg, in an incident it linked to television personality Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizokthola crew.
In a statement signed by its Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President-General, George O. Sylvester, the union said the deceased was from Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to NUSA, Nnaemeka was married and had a three-year-old son.
The union said it was seeking clarification on the circumstances that led to his death, including the events preceding the alleged attack and the identities of those involved.
NUSA urged South African authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that everyone connected to the incident is identified and questioned.
The union said anyone found to have acted unlawfully should be prosecuted, irrespective of their position or affiliation.
It also called for clarification on whether the incident occurred during an authorised operation and asked authorities to disclose the measures being taken to establish what happened.
NUSA said it would engage relevant South African authorities and work with the Nigerian diplomatic mission, including the Consul-General’s Office and the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, to pursue the matter.
The organisation also appealed to Nigerian diplomatic officials to intensify discussions with South African authorities over the safety and protection of Nigerians living in the country.
While acknowledging the need for lawful efforts to combat crime and drug-related activities, NUSA stressed that allegations of criminal conduct must be addressed through due process.
The union said Nnaemeka’s death had left his young son without a father and called for the circumstances surrounding the incident to be established.
NUSA maintained that it would continue to seek answers and accountability for the deceased and his family.
