Nigeria and Senegal have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and strengthening parliamentary cooperation, with a focus on regional stability and economic collaboration.
President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, stated this while receiving the Speaker of the Parliament of Senegal, Amadou Mame Diop, on the sidelines of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Akpabio described both countries as “brother nations bound by history, culture, and a shared destiny,” stressing the need for closer collaboration between their legislatures to promote democratic governance and sustain peace in West Africa.
He reiterated Nigeria’s leadership role in regional conflict resolution and its commitment to working with Senegal and other partners to strengthen democratic institutions and maintain stability across the sub-region.
The Senate President also highlighted the importance of parliamentary leadership in governance, noting that Nigeria’s bicameral National Assembly remains central to the country’s democratic process.
In his remarks, Diop expressed appreciation for the reception, reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with Nigeria.
He described the relationship as “historic and strategic,” and commended Nigeria’s leadership role on the continent.
Diop also pointed to opportunities for increased economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, noting that Senegal could benefit from Nigeria’s experience following its recent entry into oil production. He added that the growing presence of Nigerian investors in Senegal reflects the strength of bilateral ties.
Both leaders emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting regional integration, trade, and collaboration in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and energy as critical to Africa’s development.
Akpabio further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and regional peace initiatives, while extending an invitation to the Senegalese Speaker to visit Abuja.
