The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has carried out the destruction of confiscated contraband items recovered from inmates across custodial centres nationwide, in a renewed effort to tighten internal security and reinforce prison regulations.

According to the service, the destroyed items were seized during a series of routine inspections and intelligence-led operations conducted in correctional facilities across the country. The recovered materials included mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drugs, power banks, and other prohibited objects.

Authorities say such items are strictly banned within custodial centres because they pose significant security risks and can undermine rehabilitation and reformation programmes designed for inmates.

The destruction exercise was conducted at the NCoS headquarters in line with operational procedures that require the disposal of seized contraband after proper documentation and verification. Officials described the process as part of standard enforcement measures aimed at sustaining discipline within correctional facilities.

Service authorities emphasised that the initiative is intended to deter smuggling activities, curb illegal communication within prisons, and strengthen overall institutional control. They added that custodial centres must remain secure environments focused on reform rather than criminal coordination.

The NCoS also confirmed that routine cell inspections will continue across all facilities nationwide, stressing that the removal of prohibited items is central to improving correctional standards and supporting the broader objective of rehabilitating inmates for successful reintegration into society.
