The death toll from last week’s devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 903, while the number of people reported missing has nearly doubled to 4,247, authorities said on Monday.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 592 foreign nationals were among those missing. The United States State Department also said about 85 Americans remained unaccounted for.
Rescue teams are still struggling to reach several devastated communities days after massive flooding linked to a glacier collapse in the Nepal-Tibet border region.
The Nepal Red Cross said more than 90,000 people had been affected by the disaster, while Nepali authorities reported that more than 10,400 people, including 277 foreign nationals, had been rescued.
The scale of the disaster has overwhelmed morgues in some parts of the country. A police officer in Chitwan district told Reuters that more than half of the bodies recovered there were so badly damaged that they could not be identified.
Ferrin Cole, an operations director with the US-based Crisis Response International, described the devastation as overwhelming, saying the flood swept through communities with enormous force.
China has separately reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in its Tibet region, including hundreds of foreign nationals. Authorities have not established how much overlap exists between the missing-person figures reported by Nepal and China.
The rescue effort is facing additional challenges from continuing rainfall and rising river levels across Nepal.
A landslide-dammed lake above a border checkpoint is also overflowing, according to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, although authorities said the likelihood of a complete breach was relatively low.
The rising water levels have prompted fresh warnings for communities living along rivers as rescue teams continue searching for survivors and people still unaccounted for.
Officials said the search and recovery operation remains ongoing, with difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and continuing adverse weather complicating efforts to reach affected communities.
