Police officers on Monday dispersed protesting pensioners at Lagos House, Ikeja, after retirees under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme staged a demonstration over unpaid pension benefits and delayed implementation of approved pension adjustments.
The pensioners gathered at the Lagos State Government premises to demand the payment of outstanding pension arrears, implementation of approved pension increases, wage awards and other entitlements they said had remained unsettled.
The retirees said they embarked on the protest to draw attention to their welfare concerns and urge the state government to take immediate steps to address their demands.
The demonstration was disrupted when police personnel reportedly deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters. The action led to further complaints from the pensioners, who expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the protest was handled.
The retirees said their major concerns include the payment of accumulated pension arrears, implementation of approved pension enhancement measures and settlement of other outstanding financial obligations owed to them.
The pensioners had earlier issued August 31 as a deadline for the Lagos State Government to address the issues surrounding pension adjustments and wage awards.
Following the disruption of the protest, the retirees renewed their appeal to the state government to intervene and ensure that all outstanding benefits are paid to affected pensioners without further delay.
