Argentina captain, Lionel Messi is expected to return to action when the reigning world champions face Iceland in their final preparatory match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday in Auburn, Alabama.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed that the Inter Miami star will feature in the friendly after missing Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Honduras on June 6 due to muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Scaloni said Messi is fit enough to play but that his minutes will be carefully managed to avoid any risk of aggravating the injury.

“Messi will play, although we have not yet decided how many minutes he will get. We will discuss that after training and make the best decision for his condition,” Scaloni said.
The Argentina coach added that the technical crew intends to distribute playing time across the squad as part of efforts to keep players fresh and injury-free ahead of the tournament.
Scaloni also confirmed that Nico Paz, Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel have recovered from recent injuries and are available for selection.
Meanwhile, forward Julian Alvarez and midfielder Leandro Paredes are making steady progress in their recovery from fitness concerns.
“Julian Alvarez is improving well and the discomfort in his ankle is easing. Leandro Paredes is also recovering and should rejoin full training in the coming days,” the coach said.

Argentina are still considering options to replace defender Leonardo Balerdi, who was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a calf injury.
The Albiceleste will begin their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan in Group J.
