Manchester United have made a late enquiry for Manchester City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri as they search for defensive reinforcements before the close of the 2026/27 summer transfer window.
With just hours remaining before the transfer deadline, United are exploring alternative options after failing to secure their preferred targets for the left-back position.
The club had been linked with a move for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde, as well as other potential options, but reports indicate that a deal for Balde is no longer expected to happen.
United have already invested heavily during the summer transfer window, strengthening their midfield with the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba in a combined deal worth around £155 million. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow also joined the club on a free transfer.
However, concerns remain among supporters over squad depth at left-back, particularly due to Luke Shaw’s injury history despite the England international featuring in all 38 Premier League matches last season.
Reports indicate United also considered a permanent move for Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas, who reportedly has a €16 million release clause, but that option is now unlikely to materialise.
The club has now turned attention towards Ait-Nouri, with reports stating that United have made an initial enquiry for the Manchester City defender.
Ait-Nouri joined City from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer and was initially seen as a major addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. However, he made only 12 Premier League starts before losing his place in the team to Nico O’Reilly.
Manchester City are understood to believe a transfer is unlikely due to the limited time remaining in the window, but the club has not completely ruled out the possibility of a late agreement.
The move highlights Manchester United’s continued efforts to strengthen their defensive options before the transfer deadline closes.
