Manchester City’s proposed £80 million move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is reportedly close to collapsing, with the deal depending on Liverpool securing a replacement before the transfer deadline.
City had opened discussions with Liverpool over a possible move for the Netherlands international, while the Anfield club was prepared to consider a sale if it could bring in another attacking option.
Liverpool completed the signing of France forward Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million on Monday, but the club is still expected to demand another attacking player if Gakpo leaves.
The Premier League champions had identified Brighton forward Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr as potential targets, but negotiations have been complicated by valuation concerns.
Liverpool are now expected to retain the services of the 27-year-old forward unless they can complete another winger signing before the transfer window closes.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are considering alternatives and have shown interest in Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye.
Ndiaye, 26, had been expected to join Tottenham Hotspur, but City’s interest could lead to a late move for the Senegal international as they look to strengthen their attacking options.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in 2023 and has scored 51 goals in all competitions for the club.
