Growing insecurity around tertiary institutions in Ogun State has left many students living in constant fear as armed robberies, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and other violent crimes continue to threaten academic communities.

For many undergraduates, personal safety has become a greater concern than academic success. Students residing in communities surrounding campuses say they now navigate daily life with anxiety, uncertain about what danger may await them after dark. Reports of criminals targeting hostels and off-campus residences have become increasingly common, forcing many students to adopt strict safety measures.

The situation has been particularly troubling around Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, where several security incidents have been recorded over the years. According to accounts gathered from students and school officials, robberies, kidnappings, and fatal attacks have become recurring challenges in neighbouring communities such as Isara, Ipara, and Ode-Remo.

Recent concerns intensified following the abduction of five students who were reportedly intercepted by armed men while travelling along the Isara-Ode Road. Security operatives later rescued the victims, but the incident further heightened fears among students and residents.

Beyond Gateway ICT Polytechnic, other institutions have also experienced similar security challenges. At Olabisi Onabanjo University’s College of Engineering in Ibogun, armed attackers reportedly invaded student hostels on separate occasions, carting away valuables and a vehicle after hours of operation.

Tai Solarin University of Education has likewise faced incidents involving robbery and sexual violence against students in nearby residential areas. These attacks have fueled calls for stronger security measures around campuses and student accommodation centres.

In response to the worsening situation, the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic recently convened an emergency security summit to address the growing threats facing students. The institution’s leadership emphasised that ensuring safety requires collaboration among school authorities, host communities, security agencies, and government institutions.

School officials revealed that one student was recently killed during an armed robbery attack, underscoring the severity of the crisis. They also appealed for stricter monitoring of off-campus residents and stronger cooperation between landlords and school authorities to prevent criminals from infiltrating student communities.

The institution further called on the Ogun State Police Command to increase security presence in affected areas. School administrators alleged that some commercial motorcycle operators may be assisting criminal elements and identified certain locations as safe havens where suspects evade arrest.

Community leaders have also demanded urgent action, including the deployment of additional security personnel, installation of surveillance systems, improved street lighting, and the establishment of rapid-response units to protect students. They stressed that safeguarding students must remain a top priority and urged authorities to ensure accountability in handling reported cases.

Security experts, however, argue that addressing campus insecurity will require both improved policing and greater awareness among students. They advised undergraduates to exercise caution, avoid displaying wealth, and adopt safer lifestyles while authorities work to tackle broader societal factors contributing to crime.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has assured students and residents that it is intensifying intelligence-driven operations across tertiary institutions. Police authorities say several suspects linked to violent crimes have been arrested, while additional measures have been introduced to strengthen security around campuses and student communities.

Despite these assurances, many students remain apprehensive, hoping that sustained intervention from security agencies and government authorities will restore confidence and make learning environments safe once again.
