Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met with Sierra Leonean President, Julius Maada Bio at the State House in Freetown to discuss regional peace, democratic governance, and cooperation within the West African sub-region.

Jonathan said the visit was undertaken in his capacity as Special Envoy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the ECOWAS Commission, and Chairman of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF).

According to the former Nigerian leader, the meeting focused on issues of mutual interest, particularly matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional collaboration among countries in West Africa.

The engagement comes amid growing regional concerns over political instability, democratic transitions, and security challenges facing parts of the ECOWAS bloc.

Jonathan expressed appreciation to President Bio for what he described as a warm reception and fruitful discussions during the visit.

“I deeply appreciate President Bio for the warm reception, gracious hospitality, and conviviality extended to me during our fruitful engagements,” Jonathan stated.

Jonathan has continued to play active diplomatic and mediation roles across Africa through ECOWAS and the West African Elders Forum, particularly in matters relating to democracy, elections, and conflict resolution.
