Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has bid farewell to former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma as he returns to Freetown after spending more than two years in Nigeria.
Mr Jonathan disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, describing the former Sierra Leonean leader as a “dear friend and brother.”
He said Nigeria became a “home away from home” for Mr Koroma during his stay, adding that he was grateful for the opportunity to offer him friendship, support and solidarity.
According to Mr Jonathan, he and other individuals quietly encouraged dialogue between Mr Koroma and the Sierra Leonean authorities to facilitate his safe and dignified return.
“As we say farewell today, I am particularly happy that he is returning home to Freetown,” Mr Jonathan said.
He wished Mr Koroma a safe journey and peace as he begins a new chapter of his life.
The former Nigerian president expressed hope that the return would contribute to reconciliation and renewed optimism for Mr Koroma, his family and the people of Sierra Leone.
“Safe travels, my brother. Sierra Leone welcomes you home,” he said.
