Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has inaugurated 12 new members of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) for the Court of Appeal as part of efforts to strengthen integrity and accountability within the judiciary.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Monday in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Finance and Accounts of the Court of Appeal, Mr Moom Goon, who represented the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, urged staff and management not to relent in sustaining ethical standards within the institution.

He reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to becoming one of the top three public institutions in Nigeria in terms of integrity and accountability.

“We must not rest on our oars but continue improving the image of the Court,” Goon said.

Representing the Chairman of the ICPC, Dr Musa Aliyu, SAN, the Director of Systems Study and Review, Mr Segun Adigun, described ACTU as a critical mechanism for promoting transparency and ethical conduct in government institutions.

Adigun said the Unit was responsible for ethics and integrity education, reviewing institutional systems for corruption risks, advising management on best practices, and handling complaints relating to corrupt practices.

He clarified that ACTU does not compete with management but rather supports efforts aimed at improving accountability and transparency.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to outgoing ACTU members by the ICPC Chairman and the Chief Registrar in recognition of their contributions to promoting transparency within the Court of Appeal.

In her remarks, the outgoing Acting ACTU Chairperson, Mrs Josephine Ekpereobe, attributed the Unit’s achievements to the support received from the Court of Appeal management and the ICPC.

She disclosed that under the outgoing team, the Court of Appeal moved from a position of non-compliance to eighth position on the judiciary’s integrity index.

Ekpereobe urged the newly inaugurated members to work together and sustain the progress already achieved.

The oath of allegiance was administered to the new ACTU executives by the ICPC Legal Officer, Barrister. Dorathy Suleiman.

Speaking on behalf of the new executives, the newly appointed ACTU Chairman, Barr. Evaristus Bapman, thanked the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, CFR, management, and staff for their support.

He pledged that the new leadership would uphold integrity, accountability, and excellence in service delivery.
