U.S. President, Donald Trump has said he would not spend $1,000 to watch the United States men’s national team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, describing the ticket prices as excessive and potentially exclusionary for ordinary fans.

Trump made the remarks during a phone interview with the New York Post, reacting to reports that tickets for the U.S. team’s opening match against Paraguay in Los Angeles could cost around $1,000.

“I did not know that number. I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay for it either, to be honest with you,” he said.

The comments come amid growing debate over the pricing strategy for the 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Football governing body FIFA has faced criticism from fans and supporters’ groups over dynamic pricing and resale costs, which have pushed some tickets far beyond the reach of average spectators.

President Trump also expressed concern that high prices could shut out many supporters, particularly working-class fans. He said he would be disappointed if loyal supporters were unable to attend matches due to cost barriers.

The statement followed earlier public defence of the pricing structure by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who has argued that ticket costs reflect market demand and the commercial realities of hosting the world’s most-watched sporting event.

Despite the controversy, FIFA reports strong sales momentum for the tournament, which is expected to be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and matches across North America.

Meanwhile, the 2026 World Cup is set to kick off on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19.
