The House of Representatives has called for urgent and coordinated reforms to address rising insecurity in Nigeria, including the fast-tracking of the State Police Bill currently before the National Assembly.

The resolutions followed deliberations at plenary on a matter of urgent public importance on insecurity across the country.

In a statement, Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem, Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, said lawmakers made several key recommendations aimed at strengthening national security architecture.

The House urged the Federal Government to deploy modern technology for real-time monitoring of security situations nationwide, while also calling on all 36 state governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to enhance surveillance.

Lawmakers further recommended the empowerment of local government councils to establish security committees tasked with monitoring activities within their jurisdictions.

The House also resolved to summon top security and economic officials to a closed-door session on Wednesday to provide details on security funding disbursements over the past six months. Those expected to appear include the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; the Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed; and the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele.

In addition, the House urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the recruitment of forest guards in states affected by insecurity, similar to measures already implemented in Oyo State.

The lawmakers emphasized that the recommendations were aimed at strengthening collaboration among federal, state, and local authorities to improve national security outcomes.
