Plans by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have fallen through – following a disagreement over the control of party structures in the state.
The proposed move hit a deadlock after the APC leadership reportedly rejected a 60–40 power-sharing formula demanded by the governor’s camp, effectively ending weeks of consultations between both sides.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in Bauchi State, Sama’ila Burga, confirmed that discussions had been formally discontinued due to the inability of both parties to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
According to Burga, the APC had initiated talks through Governor Mohammed, involving its national leadership and even the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, who visited Bauchi in a bid to persuade the governor to join the ruling party.
However, negotiations broke down when the APC declined to accept the proposed sharing formula, which the PDP faction insisted had been applied in similar defections in other states.
“This is how it has been done in other places where governors defected to APC. They rejected this formula and we have closed that discussion. You cannot expect a government bringing its structure from ward level to the state not to have control of the party,” Burga stated.
He further revealed that the press briefing was held at the instance of Governor Mohammed, who has been leading the consultation process.
“After careful consideration, it became clear that the conditions collectively advanced for such a political realignment were not accepted by the APC leadership. In light of this, we want to announce that the discussions have not yielded a conclusive outcome and are hereby formally discontinued,” he said.
Despite the collapse of talks with the APC, Burga noted that the governor and his supporters remain open to exploring other political platforms.
“While we appreciate the outreach and engagement by the APC, we wish to state unequivocally that the process has now been brought to a close. Consequently, the PDP in Bauchi State… is actively considering all available political options other than the APC to determine the most suitable path forward,” he added.
The development signals a fresh twist in Bauchi’s political landscape, as the governor’s camp weighs its next move ahead of future political alignments.
