The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the alleged obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing the Yelwata community in Benue State, where he planned to visit families affected by recent killings.
The party alleged that suspected thugs stopped Mr Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from proceeding into the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group that blocked the convoy was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
The party described the incident as disturbing, saying Mr Obi’s visit was intended to enable him commiserate with affected families, express solidarity with the victims and hear directly from residents.
According to the statement, Mr Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. and proceeded towards Yelwata as part of his planned visit to families affected by the violence.
The party said his convoy was stopped by individuals chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
Mr Obi was quoted as saying that his visit was not politically motivated but aimed at sympathising with victims and their families.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he said.
The NDC said Nigerians, particularly residents of conflict-affected communities, should be able to live, travel and farm without fear.
It urged the Benue State Government and security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure adequate protection for citizens and public figures visiting communities affected by violence.
The party said the denial of access to Yelwata would not diminish its concern for the victims, their relatives and the wider community.
It reiterated its commitment to advocating the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
