The Gboko Local Government Council in Benue State has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew following violent protests over the killing of a commercial motorcycle operator by unidentified gunmen.
The curfew, which took effect on Thursday, October 8, 2026, was announced by the council chairman, Torseer Yina, as part of emergency measures to restore peace and prevent further violence.
The council also suspended the leadership of the Benue Motorcycle Hirers Association (BEMOA), Gboko branch, following the unrest.
The incident began on Wednesday night when a commercial motorcycle operator was reportedly shot at close range in Gboko South by an unidentified attacker who allegedly escaped with his motorcycle.
The killing sparked protests on Thursday morning as commercial motorcycle operators took to the streets to demand justice.
However, the council’s Security Adviser, Akaakohol Nev, said the demonstration subsequently turned violent after suspected hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the protest.

According to Nev, protesters attacked the office of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards along Shaahu Road and set two operational vehicles ablaze.
He explained that some protesters suspected personnel of the security outfit of involvement in the killing, reportedly basing their allegations on the type of ammunition believed to have been used.
The allegations have not been established, and the circumstances surrounding the motorcyclist’s death remain under investigation.
Nev further disclosed that the council received reports that a rifle was allegedly taken from the Civil Protection Guards’ office during the disturbance.
He said the police had commenced investigations into the killing, the subsequent violence and the reported disappearance of the firearm.
Following the unrest, Chairman Yina ordered the immediate suspension of the BEMOA leadership in Gboko.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Local Government Security Council, the authorities said the curfew and other emergency measures were necessary to contain the situation and safeguard lives and property.

The council warned residents against violating the restriction or engaging in activities capable of threatening public peace.
However, individuals and vehicles providing essential services are exempted from the curfew.
Security authorities are expected to continue investigations into the killing and the violent protest, while the local government maintains measures aimed at restoring normal activities in Gboko.
