The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries in Rivers State, citing the need to preserve peace, stability, and unity in the state ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Rivers State governor said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and political associates.

Fubara described the move as a painful but necessary sacrifice made in the interest of the state, stressing that leadership sometimes requires personal ambition to give way for the collective good.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.

The governor also pledged support for whoever eventually emerges as the candidate of the APC, reaffirming his loyalty to the ruling party and urging party faithful to remain united.

Addressing his supporters, Fubara acknowledged the disappointment many may feel following his withdrawal, appreciating them for their loyalty, prayers, and sacrifices throughout the political process.

“My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic, guided always by the higher interest of our state and our people,” he said.

In what appeared to be a veiled reference to political pressures surrounding the contest, the governor noted that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices,” but maintained that his commitment to Rivers State remained unwavering.

Using a proverb to underscore his position, Fubara said: “Not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose.”

The governor expressed gratitude to the APC leadership for providing him a platform during the process and also thanked Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.

Fubara emphasised that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender, insisting that the decision was driven solely by his desire to ensure peace and unity in Rivers State.

“I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he declared.

He further assured residents that he remains committed to serving the people of Rivers State until the completion of his tenure as governor.
