President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has emphasised the importance of Nigerians actively defending democracy through courage, consistency, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 NBA Abuja Branch Law Week, Osigwe expressed concern over the persistent challenges confronting Nigeria’s democratic system decades after independence, noting that democracy weakens gradually when citizens lose confidence in institutions and stop demanding accountability.

According to him, the integrity of any democratic system depends not only on constitutional provisions but also on the collective determination of citizens and leaders to uphold justice, transparency and accountability.
The NBA President observed that recurring controversies surrounding elections and governance continue to raise questions about the strength and credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, a development he described as troubling for a nation committed to constitutional rule.
He emphasised that the Nigerian Constitution clearly provides that political power can only be attained through democratic means, warning that any erosion of democratic principles could undermine public trust and national stability.
Osigwe noted that the theme of the 2026 Law Week was particularly relevant as political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to dominate national discourse.

He maintained that discussions at professional and civic gatherings, such as the NBA Law Week, have the capacity to shape reforms, strengthen institutions, and promote public confidence in governance.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria further urged citizens, public institutions and political leaders not to become indifferent to the responsibility of protecting democratic ideals, insisting that the survival of democracy depends on sustained vigilance and respect for the rule of law.
He commended the NBA Abuja Branch for choosing a timely and thought-provoking theme for the event and expressed optimism that the deliberations would contribute meaningfully to the advancement of democratic governance in Nigeria.
