Former Aston Villa winger Steve Froggatt has backed Ollie Watkins’ reported desire to leave the club, saying the striker should depart with the gratitude of the club’s supporters.
Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Froggatt described Watkins as Aston Villa’s greatest goalscorer and said the supporters should remain central to any decision surrounding his future.
“The supporters are the most important people at the football club,” Froggatt said.
“Ollie is the greatest goalscorer at the club, and he should walk away into the sunset with the thanks of everyone at Villa Park.”
Watkins has been at the centre of speculation over his future, with reports indicating that the England international is considering leaving Villa Park.
The striker has established himself as one of Aston Villa’s most important attacking players since joining the club from Brentford in 2020.
Froggatt’s comments come as uncertainty continues over whether Watkins will remain with Villa or seek a move elsewhere before the transfer window closes.
The 30-year-old has been a key contributor to Villa’s recent success, and any departure would represent a significant change for Unai Emery’s side.
