Former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has emphasized the critical role of the family as the foundation for instilling values that shape a responsible and progressive society.
He made this known during a funeral Mass held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, University of Uyo, in honour of the late Nurse Rosemary Chris Udofia, wife of Dr. Chris Udofia, a former Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, and mother-in-law to the State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Development, Dr. Linus Nkan.
In his tribute, the former governor highlighted the unique and indispensable role of women within both the family and the wider community. Drawing from everyday experiences, he likened a mother’s care to that of a protective hen and referenced the term “mother tongue” to illustrate the deep-rooted influence of mothers in shaping identity and communication.
According to him, mothers occupy a central place in family life, often serving as the closest figure to every member of the household. He noted that the loss of a wife and mother leaves a profound void, regardless of age, due to her nurturing and unifying presence.
He offered prayers for the bereaved family, urging them to uphold the admirable legacy of the deceased, while asking God to grant her eternal rest.
Emmanuel also commended various groups within the Catholic Church for their contributions to societal development, encouraging sustained collaboration and prayerful support for leadership at all levels.
A condolence message from the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, was delivered by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah.
Delivering the homily, Very Rev. Dr. Donatus Udoette reflected on a passage from the Gospel of John (14:1–6), reminding the congregation of the importance of spiritual readiness and preparation for life’s final journey.
In his remarks, the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Dr. Dominic Udosen, paid tribute to the late nurse’s contributions and expressed appreciation to attendees for their solidarity and prayers, which he said would continue to support the repose of her soul.
The Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. Dr. John Ebebe Ayah, was represented at the service by the Diocesan Chancellor.
The well-attended ceremony drew family members, friends, and numerous sympathizers who gathered to honour the life and legacy of the deceased.
