The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun paying additional retirement benefits to federal civil servants, with about N1.1 billion disbursed to 175 retirees who left service between January and August 2026.

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the payment was being made under the Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme.

The scheme, approved by the Federal Executive Council, took effect on January 1, 2026, and provides eligible retirees with an additional benefit separate from their pension under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Under the arrangement, federal workers who have served for at least 10 years are entitled to an exit benefit equivalent to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument at retirement.

PenCom said N32.9 billion was provided in the 2026 budget for the scheme, while N12.3 billion had so far been released into a dedicated account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The commission said it was working with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Accountant-General’s Office, Pension Fund Administrators and other stakeholders to process payments.

Retirees are required to submit relevant documents, including clearance letters and recent payslips, to their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) for verification.

Once approved, the benefit is credited to the retiree’s Retirement Savings Account before the PFA transfers the funds to the beneficiary’s designated salary account.

PenCom stressed that the payment does not replace retirees’ existing pension benefits, but serves as additional financial support upon retirement.

The commission said subsequent retirees from Treasury-funded Federal Government ministries, departments and agencies who meet the requirements would also qualify for the benefit.
