The father of a 10-year-old boy rescued from strong ocean currents off the California coast has expressed profound gratitude to the teenage lifeguard whose swift response saved his son’s life.
The dramatic rescue, which was captured on video, took place on Saturday at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, about 100 kilometres south of San Francisco.
According to the boy’s father, Sumit Rai, his son, Nathaniel, was standing in shallow water when powerful waves knocked him off balance and swept him into the ocean.
Rai, who was in his hometown of Dallas when the incident occurred, said he first learned about the ordeal during a phone conversation with his children later that day.
“My son told me he drowned and that he lost consciousness,” Rai said, adding that the 10-year-old was still in shock while recounting the experience.
The following day, Rai watched video footage of the rescue, which has since attracted widespread attention, including from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The rescue was carried out by 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who said he saw Nathaniel lose his footing in ankle-deep water before being dragged into the surf.
Williams immediately alerted fellow lifeguards over the radio before rushing into the turbulent waters.
He explained that his first attempt to pull the boy to safety was unsuccessful because Nathaniel had become limp while strong waves continued to push them farther into the ocean.
According to California State Parks, the child had been swept about 15 yards (approximately 14 metres) offshore before Williams reached him.
Video from the scene shows the teenage lifeguard diving through crashing waves while holding firmly onto the unconscious boy.
A second lifeguard later joined the rescue effort, while Williams instructed nearby beachgoers to remain on shore to avoid putting themselves in danger.
Reflecting on the incident, Williams said he was grateful to have been able to reunite the child with his family.
“I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely. This is my job, and I love what I do,” he said, while also acknowledging the efforts of his fellow lifeguards who carry out similar rescues regularly.
California State Parks confirmed that Nathaniel did not suffer any serious physical injuries and was released to his family after receiving medical evaluation.
However, his father said the experience has left lasting emotional effects.
Rai said his son inhaled sand and spent some time coughing after reaching the shore but is now recovering physically.
“He still thinks about what happened, and it affects his sleep. It was a traumatic experience,” Rai said.
He added that he has contacted Williams and hopes to personally thank the teenager for his courage and selflessness.
“What he did is something I can never repay. I will remain forever grateful,” Rai said.
