Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernández has revealed his determination to return to Argentine club River Plate before retiring from professional football, despite joining the Premier League side just two months ago.

The 25-year-old Argentina international, who completed a £125 million move from Chelsea to Manchester City in September, said representing his boyhood club again remained one of his greatest ambitions.

Speaking during an appearance on the Argentine programme Los Edul, Fernández explained that his emotional connection to River Plate had remained strong throughout his European career.

He expressed confidence that he would eventually return to the Buenos Aires club, where he developed through the youth system before establishing himself in senior football.

The midfielder said his ambition was not simply to return home but also to compete for major trophies and spend more time experiencing the atmosphere surrounding the club.

Fernández, however, made it clear that an immediate departure from Manchester City was not under consideration.

He acknowledged that he had a long-term contract with the English club and considerable time remaining before a possible return to Argentina.

The midfielder signed a five-year agreement with City, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.

His transfer from Chelsea reportedly cost £125 million, equalling the British transfer record and making him one of the most expensive midfielders in football history.

Before moving to Europe, Fernández progressed through River Plate’s academy and made 53 senior appearances, scoring 12 goals.

He joined Portuguese club Benfica in 2022 before securing a high-profile transfer to Chelsea, where he became an important member of the first team.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, he helped the London club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The Argentina international subsequently moved to Manchester City on September 1, 2026, as part of the club’s efforts to strengthen its midfield.

Since arriving, Fernández has made 10 appearances and scored once, including a goal against Sunderland in the Premier League.

Although his latest comments have attracted attention over his long-term future, there is no indication that Fernández has requested a transfer or intends to leave City in the immediate future.

For now, the midfielder remains committed to his responsibilities in Manchester while maintaining his ambition to return to River Plate at a later stage of his career.
