Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has joined an exclusive group of Premier League managers after taking charge of his 250th top-flight match with the club, becoming the 10th manager to reach the milestone with a single team.
The achievement came during Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, where Bukayo Saka scored the decisive second-half goal to secure another important league win for the reigning champions.
Arteta is now among managers such as former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola who have managed at least 250 Premier League matches for one club. He also became the second person, after Mark Hughes, to have both played and managed at least 250 Premier League games.
The Spanish coach has guided Arsenal for almost seven years, building a team widely recognised for defensive organisation, tactical discipline and consistency. The Gunners have developed a reputation for being difficult to break down, with players repeatedly highlighting Arteta’s attention to detail and demanding approach.
Arsenal’s latest victory continued their strong defensive record. The team prevented Aston Villa from registering a shot on target, extending their impressive start to the season.
The club entered the current campaign as Premier League champions after winning the title last season, ending a 22-year wait for league success. During that title-winning campaign, Arsenal conceded the fewest goals in the division and recorded six league matches without allowing opponents a shot on target.
Goalkeeper David Raya has won the Premier League Golden Glove award for the past three seasons, while defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have both been named in the PFA Team of the Year during the same period.
Since March, Arsenal have recorded eight Premier League clean sheets, more than any other club during that period except Juventus among teams in Europe’s top five leagues.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry praised the team’s collective effort following the victory, highlighting the commitment of every player to both attacking and defensive responsibilities.
The Gunners have also strengthened their squad in recent transfer windows, investing heavily to improve competition for places. The club spent significant amounts bringing in new players, including Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa, while making permanent the signing of Piero Hincapie.
Arteta said squad depth would be important in the pursuit of further success, adding that new arrivals must contribute to maintaining the team’s high standards.
However, Arsenal are still monitoring opportunities to strengthen their attacking options, with the club previously linked with forwards including Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
With Arteta now among the longest-serving Premier League managers and Arsenal continuing to compete at the highest level, the club will aim to maintain their position among England’s leading teams as the season progresses.
