ENGR. UKEME EYO TO CHAIR 2026 WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY IN AKWA IBOM

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has announced that renowned engineer and Chief Executive Officer of U&K Integrated Services, Engr. Ukeme Eyo, will chair the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebration.

The event, themed: “ Shaping a Future at Peace : The Critical Role of Journalism in Promoting Peace and Resolving Conflicts in Akwa Ibom State.” is scheduled to hold on May 3, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre.

According to the Council, Engr. Eyo’s selection reflects his contributions to infrastructural development and private sector growth within the state. The construction magnate leads U&K Integrated Services, one of the fast-rising firms in Akwa Ibom’s building and engineering sector.

The keynote address at the event will be delivered by Prof. Iniobong Umotong, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Akwa Ibom State University, who is expected to speak on the role of journalism in fostering peacebuilding and conflict resolution in contemporary society.

The NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, assured members and stakeholders of a robust and engaging Press Week program and urged journalists across the state to actively participate in the series of events lined up for the celebration.

He added that World Press Freedom Day is observed globally as a reminder of the importance of press liberty and the protection of journalists, and will once again serve as a platform for dialogue on media responsibility, democratic governance, and societal development in Akwa Ibom State.

According to Comrade Oku Udoetor, Chairman of the Planning Committee, the event is expected to bring about engaging moments that will deepen professional discourse among journalists, policymakers, and stakeholders in the state.

He noted that the 2026 edition of the World Press Freedom Day celebration has been carefully designed to go beyond ceremonial gatherings, emphasizing intellectual engagement and practical discussions around the role of the media in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
