At least eight people have been confirmed dead, 35 others injured after a freight train collided with a public bus and several vehicles in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, authorities said on Saturday.

The accident occurred near an airport rail link station in the city centre during the afternoon rush period, causing panic and triggering a large-scale emergency response operation. Reports indicated that the impact of the collision dragged nearby vehicles before the bus was engulfed in flames.

Emergency responders and firefighters were deployed to the scene to rescue trapped victims and contain the fire. Authorities confirmed that all reported fatalities were passengers aboard the bus, while injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Preliminary reports suggested that the bus may have become trapped at a railway crossing shortly after safety barriers descended, although officials said investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident. Authorities have not ruled out possible technical or operational failures.

However, Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has directed relevant agencies to conduct a full investigation into the crash to fully understand the reason for the incident.

Reports have it that the incident has also renewed concerns over rail safety and infrastructure in the country, following previous fatal railway accidents in recent months.
