The Esports Federation of Nigeria (EFN) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have commenced discussions aimed at introducing a structured esports framework into Nigerian universities as part of efforts to promote digital innovation and technological development across tertiary institutions.
The meeting, which took place at the NUC headquarters on Thursday, focused on the proposed framework’s objectives, implementation strategy and expected impact within the Nigerian University System.

The initiative is expected to position Nigerian universities as hubs for innovation while strengthening the country’s presence in the rapidly growing global digital and gaming industry.
President of the Esports Federation of Nigeria, Yahaya Maikori, was represented at the meeting by the federation’s Vice President, Clinton Agbor, alongside board members Ikechukwu Okoye and Ifeanyi Elumeziem.
Discussions also identified several key areas for academic and technological development, including esports research, gaming psychology, digital behaviour studies, artificial intelligence applications in gaming, virtual and augmented reality technologies, immersive innovations and African game development.
Both organisations said the proposed framework would go beyond gaming activities by introducing policies to ensure academic balance and student welfare.
The framework is expected to include provisions for mental health monitoring, anti-addiction measures, ethical competition standards, professional coaching and player support systems.

The EFN and NUC expressed confidence that the collaboration would create opportunities for research, creativity and technological advancement, while helping Nigerian universities adapt to emerging trends in digital education and innovation.
