The Commissioners’ and Special Advisers’ Wives Association (COSAWA), Akwa Ibom State, has called for increased awareness, compassion, and support for people living with mental health conditions as part of efforts to reduce stigma and improve access to care.
The call was made during a visit by association members to the Mental Health Department of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) on Saturday.
Speaking during the outreach, President of COSAWA, Dr Bright Frank Archibong, said the visit aimed to encourage patients receiving treatment and reassure them that they are not alone in their recovery journey.

She stressed the need for greater attention to mental health issues, noting that many individuals and families continue to face challenges associated with mental illness due to inadequate awareness and societal stigma.
Dr Archibong commended the patients for their resilience and praised healthcare professionals at the facility for their commitment to providing quality care and support to those undergoing treatment.
According to her, the initiative forms part of COSAWA’s broader efforts to promote mental health advocacy, encourage public understanding of mental health challenges, and support ongoing interventions in the sector. She added that the association’s activities align with the objectives of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s ARISE Agenda and the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA).
The COSAWA delegation was received by the Matron on Duty, Nurse Unwana Ikpe, and the Doctor on Duty, Dr Mrs. Goodness Alphonsus.
Responding on behalf of the hospital, Nurse Ikpe and Psychologist Mrs Aniefiok Udofia commended the association for its visit, describing it as a significant gesture that would boost the morale of patients and contribute to ongoing efforts to raise awareness about mental health.
Mrs Udofia also educated patients on healthy practices that could aid their recovery and enhance their overall wellbeing.
The visit featured the presentation of gifts to patients, while a vote of thanks was delivered by COSAWA Secretary, Mrs Iniobong Bob.

Speaking on behalf of the patients, Miss Violet N. Chidi expressed appreciation to the association for its show of care and support, describing the visit as encouraging and uplifting.
Mental health advocates have continued to emphasise the importance of community support, awareness campaigns, and sustained investment in mental healthcare services to improve outcomes for patients and their families.
