The member representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, has described sustainable development as a strategic approach to meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Chinda remarked a free medical outreach organised by the Directorate of Welfare of the Nigerian Students Legislative Council at the University of Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
Represented by former Chairman of the APC in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Leslie Ejekwu, the lawmaker said government and institutional policies should be designed to promote long-term growth and development rather than undermine the prospects of future generations.

Ejekwu stated that, as part of efforts to advance sustainable development in the constituency, Chinda had constructed and equipped a Skills Acquisition and Craft Centre in Atali Community, where residents are being empowered through vocational and entrepreneurial training programmes.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Welfare of the Nigerian Students Legislative Council and convener of the programme, Agala Glory, urged students to embrace entrepreneurship and self-reliance alongside their academic pursuits.
She noted that academic qualifications alone may not be sufficient in today’s competitive environment, encouraging students to acquire practical skills that can create additional opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Also speaking, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Port Harcourt, Chima Nwokocha, advised young people to cultivate positive values and progressive mindsets that would contribute to personal advancement and national development.

The three-day programme, organised in partnership with the Centre for Population Health Initiatives, is expected to continue on Thursday at Rivers State University with a skills acquisition session and conclude on Friday at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
