Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been ruled out of Portugal’s Nations League clash against Norway after sustaining an injury during the team’s 1-0 victory over Wales.
Fernandes was substituted late in Thursday’s encounter in Lisbon after experiencing discomfort, with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus confirming that the midfielder would not travel with the squad to Oslo.
Jesus disclosed that Fernandes had been managing the problem for several matches while playing for Manchester United and said Portugal would not risk aggravating the injury.
“In the game against Wales, we went in with all the available players, but Bruno Fernandes came off with a complicated problem,” Jesus said.
“He said he’s been dealing with that pain for about three games, and that was one of the factors that prevented him from being at his usual level against Wales.
“He was my player; I know him perfectly. I’ve already spoken to him. I prefer not to risk him in this game and have him clean and in good physical condition for the Denmark game in Copenhagen on Thursday.”
Fernandes’ absence means Portugal will be without one of their key midfielders as they seek another positive result in the Nations League.
The injury also comes after a busy start to the season for the 32-year-old, who has remained an important part of Manchester United’s team.
Fernandes has played every minute of United’s opening five Premier League matches and also completed their 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah.
He came off the bench during United’s Carabao Cup encounter with Brighton.
The midfielder has also contributed significantly in front of goal, including a hat-trick in Manchester United’s 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich.
Fernandes will now focus on recovering in time for Portugal’s Nations League encounter with Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday.
His availability for that match will depend on his recovery and assessment by the medical team.
Manchester United will also be monitoring his condition ahead of their return to Premier League action against Tottenham on October 10.
