The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has accused the Federal Government of failing in its responsibility to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

Obi made the statement on Saturday in a post on his verified X handle while reacting to recent attacks on communities in Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju in Benue State, where several people were reportedly killed by terrorists.

He called on the government to demonstrate stronger commitment to protecting citizens and addressing ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity.

Obi had visited the affected communities on Friday to sympathise with victims and residents.

According to him, more than 10 people were either killed or declared missing in Otukpo-Nobi, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in hospital.

He said another 13 people were reportedly killed in Efeyi-Ugboju, with several others injured.

Obi added that while he was in the area, he was informed that 14 people had reportedly been kidnapped along Ankpechi Road.

He said he joined residents in praying for victims at the site of a mass burial and also visited injured persons in hospital.

“The primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” Obi said, stressing that government must be reminded of its responsibility whenever it fails to protect communities affected by insecurity.

He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the recovery of those injured in the attacks.
