The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives and humanitarian programmes aimed at improving the well-being of Nigerians.
The assurance was given during the closing ceremony of the 2026 World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) celebration held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with the theme, “One Drop of Humanity: Give Blood, Save Lives.”
Represented by the Deputy Director Chaplaincy (RC), Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army, Colonel A.J. Sambo, the GOC emphasised the importance of blood donation in saving lives and supporting emergency medical care.
He noted that World Blood Donor Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the critical need for safe blood and blood products while recognising the selfless contributions of voluntary blood donors.
Major General Emekah described blood donation as one of the noblest humanitarian acts, stressing that a single unit of donated blood has the potential to save multiple lives.
According to him, the Nigerian Army, through institutions such as the Armed Forces Blood Centre (AFBC) and its medical facilities nationwide, remains committed to supporting healthcare delivery and emergency medical response across the country.
The GOC commended the leadership and personnel of the Armed Forces Blood Centre for their dedication to ensuring the availability of safe blood and sustaining campaigns that encourage voluntary blood donation.
Earlier, the Acting Director of the Armed Forces Blood Centre, Major A.J. Adankala, highlighted the continued dependence on voluntary donors despite advancements in medical science, blood testing, and safety systems.
He stressed that access to safe blood and blood products remains largely dependent on individuals who donate voluntarily and regularly.
Major Adankala called on government agencies, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders to strengthen support for voluntary blood donation initiatives and national blood programmes to guarantee universal access to safe blood and blood products.
Others who attended the event include, healthcare professionals, military personnel, voluntary blood donors, and stakeholders committed to promoting lifesaving blood donation across the country.
