The Nigerian Army has effected a change of command in its contingent serving under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), with Lieutenant Colonel Afam Junior Chidi assuming command from Lieutenant Colonel Bibode Clarke following the successful rotation of troops in the mission area.
The handing and taking over ceremony was held at the Nigerian Contingent Headquarters in Bissau on August 3.
Speaking during the ceremony, the outgoing Commanding Officer of Nigerian Company 4 (NIGCOY 4), Lieutenant Colonel Bibode Clarke, described the troop rotation as a routine military exercise designed to enhance operational effectiveness and sustain the professionalism of the Nigerian Army in peace support operations.
He thanked officers and soldiers of the contingent for their loyalty, dedication and support throughout his one-year tenure, noting that their collective efforts contributed significantly to the maintenance of peace, security and stability in Guinea-Bissau.
Lieutenant Colonel Clarke urged the incoming troops to maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and commitment in the discharge of their responsibilities.
In his acceptance remarks, the new Commanding Officer of Nigerian Company 5 (NIGCOY 5), Lieutenant Colonel Afam Junior Chidi, commended his predecessor for his exemplary leadership and the seamless transition process.
He pledged to build on the achievements recorded by Nigerian Company 4 and continue supporting the mandate of the Stabilisation Support Mission in promoting peace, security and stability in Guinea-Bissau.
The ceremony featured the signing of handing and taking-over documents, inspection of the Quarter Guard, formal transfer of command and the Nigerian Company flag, as well as group photographs.
The transition underscores Nigeria’s sustained commitment to regional peacekeeping operations and its continued support for ECOWAS efforts aimed at promoting stability, security and democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau.
