Argentine President Javier Milei has sharply criticised the United Nations, describing it as “a useless organisation” and accusing it of failing to effectively address international security and human rights challenges.
Addressing the UN on Wednesday, Milei argued that the organisation had fallen short of its responsibility to promote collective security and protect human rights, while conflicts, violence and terrorism persisted around the world.
He also attacked the UN bureaucracy, referring to some officials as “arrogant parasites.”
Milei criticised the organisation over Argentina’s longstanding sovereignty dispute with Britain concerning the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
The islands are administered by Britain but claimed by Argentina, with the two countries having fought a war over the territory in 1982.
Milei accused Britain of disregarding a UN resolution calling on the parties to avoid unilateral actions concerning the disputed territory.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.
The Argentine leader also highlighted expanding cooperation between his government and the United States.
Argentina and the US announced a joint initiative on Wednesday aimed at improving infrastructure and strengthening connections between major economic sectors, Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to focus on investment in transport and digital infrastructure as well as minerals and energy.
It is also expected to involve development linked to the Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon formation in southern Argentina.
