Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have warned against the establishment of parallel political structures that could undermine President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The position was disclosed by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, after a closed-door meeting at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Monday night.
The warning is coming amid growing tension within the ruling party over the Rainbow Coalition being championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has maintained that the coalition is aimed at supporting President Tinubu’s second-term ambition. However, some APC leaders are reportedly concerned that the arrangement could weaken the party and divide its support base ahead of the 2027 elections.
Uzodimma said the governors had resolved not to support or endorse any political arrangement capable of undermining Tinubu’s re-election, weakening the APC or affecting the party’s candidates at any level.
He added that APC governors would focus exclusively on campaigning for candidates sponsored by the party.
The governor said the forum would not support any candidate contesting under another political platform, stressing that divided loyalty and competing interests could create confusion within the party.
The governors also pledged to take charge of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign across their respective states.
The development is expected to intensify the political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in states such as Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River, where the coalition has reportedly generated political tensions.
