Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction at the ultra-modern Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt, setting January 2027 as the target for completing the project.
Fubara gave the assurance during an inspection of the market, which is expected to accommodate traders currently occupying portions of Creek Road and adjoining streets in the Old Port Harcourt Township.
The governor explained that his visit followed discussions with SETRACO, the construction company handling road resurfacing projects within the township.

According to him, the contractor identified roadside trading along Creek Road as a major obstacle to its operations, making it difficult to proceed with rehabilitation work in the area.
He said completing the market and relocating traders into designated commercial spaces would help address the obstruction and allow road resurfacing activities to proceed.
Fubara noted that the market project was designed to improve commercial activities, sanitation, environmental conditions and public safety within the township.
He expressed concern that the deteriorating condition of the existing market had forced many traders to conduct business along major roads, contributing to congestion and disorder in the area.
The governor said the administration was determined to provide a more organised trading environment while restoring the affected roads to their intended use.

He also emphasised the historical importance of the Old Port Harcourt Township, describing it as a longstanding residential and commercial district deserving of improved infrastructure and environmental management.
According to Fubara, the redevelopment initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve living conditions and promote the well-being of Rivers State residents.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of construction, maintaining that the project remained on course for completion by January 2027.
The governor added that the market would contribute to restoring cleanliness, order and accessibility within the township while providing traders with more suitable facilities for their businesses.
The January completion date remains the administration’s stated target, with the relocation of traders and the resumption of unobstructed road rehabilitation dependent on the project’s delivery.
