Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (MBEP) has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to enhance effective programme coordination and sustainable development initiatives across the state.
The assurance was given on Thursday, May 14, 2026, when a delegation from UNFPA paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Nsikan Linus Nkan, in his office in Uyo.
The meeting highlighted the longstanding collaboration between UNFPA and the Akwa Ibom State Government, particularly in the implementation of health-related interventions focusing on sexual and reproductive health, maternal healthcare, and the welfare of women and children.
Speaking during the visit, Dr Nkan commended UNFPA for its sustained support and strategic contributions to the development of the state’s health sector.
He stated that the administration of Governor Umo Eno remains committed to improving healthcare outcomes and strengthening human capital development, especially for women, children, and vulnerable groups.

According to the Commissioner, healthcare remains a major pillar of the administration’s development agenda, adding that the government would continue to provide the necessary support and enabling environment for donor-assisted programmes to succeed.
Dr Nkan also reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to sustain collaboration with UNFPA and ensure the successful implementation of ongoing and future projects in Akwa Ibom State.
He described the partnership as one that aligns with the broader vision of the state government in promoting sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents.
Leading the UNFPA delegation, the Coordinator and Head of the UNFPA Cross River Sub-Office, Dr Andrew Kirima, commended Akwa Ibom State for its strong commitment and cooperation in the implementation of UNFPA-supported programmes.
Dr Kirima disclosed that Akwa Ibom is among only three states in Nigeria currently benefiting from the UNFPA/Norway-funded project, noting that the state has recorded remarkable success in the implementation of the initiative.
He particularly praised the state’s coordination mechanisms and accountability standards, stating that Akwa Ibom’s work plan meets the required benchmarks for effective programme implementation.
The UNFPA delegation also appreciated Governor Umo Eno for approving the Government Counterpart Cash Contribution (GCCC), which they said has contributed significantly to the smooth execution of donor-supported interventions in the state.

Other members of the delegation included Programme Specialist, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Coordinator of the Norway Project in Abuja, Dr Baba Mari, and the Akwa Ibom State UNFPA Focal Person, Dr Yakubu Aliyu.
Officials present from the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning included the State Director of Economic Planning, Mr Ottobong Sambo, who represented the Permanent Secretary, and the Director of International Cooperation, Dr Mrs. Uduak Ekong.
The visit further reinforced Akwa Ibom State’s growing reputation as a reliable development partner and a model for effective donor collaboration in Nigeria’s public health and development sectors.
