The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has described the leadership style of its State Chairman, Dr Bassey Willie, as a model worthy of emulation across the political landscape of the state.
The party made the declaration in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Edidiong Umoetor, following the inauguration of the State Working Committee monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the statement, the party has witnessed a surge in membership and political activities, including the influx of over 200 aspirants and thousands of new members within 48 hours of the inauguration.

“Within one week of assuming office, Dr Bassey Willie has redefined what party leadership should look like in Akwa Ibom. His approach is open, inclusive, transparent and people-centred,” Umoetor stated.
The party’s State Secretary, Hon. Kufre Umoh, highlighted what he described as four major qualities distinguishing Dr Willie’s leadership, including internal democracy, accessibility, inclusiveness and commitment to service.
Umoh said the recent State Congress was conducted peacefully and transparently in the presence of INEC officials, adding that members and aspirants now have confidence in the party’s internal processes.
He also noted that the new leadership had embraced members from different political backgrounds, including defectors from the Obedient Movement, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structures and independent groups.
“The focus is on competence and commitment, not on who you were before,” he said.
The party further stated that Dr Willie’s leadership prioritises grassroots mobilisation, youth inclusion and issue-based politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Umoh, Akwa Ibom politics has for too long been dominated by secrecy, exclusion and godfatherism, adding that the NDC chairman has demonstrated that politics can be practised with openness and integrity.
Also speaking, the Chairman of NDC in Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Engr. Nsikan Mathew, described Dr Willie as “a leader sent from God through man to lead us in a time like this.”

The party leadership and aspirants at the event subsequently passed a vote of confidence on the state chairman.
The motion was moved by the State Women Leader, Obongawan Uduakobong Sabong, and seconded by Apostle King Edidem, the statement added.
