The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Akinteye Babatunde of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) as its new national president following the conclusion of the association’s 2026 convention in Abuja.
Akinteye, a former Senate President of NANS, defeated four other contenders in a keenly contested election held at the Old Parade Ground under heavy security provided by the police and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

He succeeds outgoing NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, whose tenure ended with the conduct of the convention widely described by delegates as one of the most peaceful in the history of the student body.
Speaking after his victory on Monday, Akinteye thanked delegates for their support and pledged to promote unity and continue programmes initiated by the previous administration.
“I thank all the delegates for electing me, a student of OAUSTECH, as the new president of NANS,” he said.
He noted that the convention recorded no violence, disruption or disputes, describing the process as a major milestone for the association.
“In the history of NANS, this is one of the best conventions we have witnessed. There was no crisis, no gunshot, no fight. All the contestants against me have congratulated me already,” Akinteye stated.
The new NANS president also promised to reposition the association and intensify advocacy on students’ welfare across tertiary institutions nationwide.
Outgoing President Oladoja described the successful election as one of the proudest moments of his administration, expressing confidence in Akinteye’s leadership capacity.

“I am happy that the person who emerged is someone I strongly believe in and trust in terms of capacity,” Oladoja said.
Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, Omotayo Samuel, disclosed that more than 300 delegates, including Students’ Union Government presidents and senate leaders from tertiary institutions across the country, participated in the exercise.
