The re-elected Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that former governor Gboyega Oyetola was behind some of the actions taken by federal agencies against his administration ahead of the governorship election.

Adeleke claimed that President Bola Tinubu was unaware of several of the developments, including the decision by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze an account belonging to the Osun State Government.

The EFCC had earlier restricted the account as part of an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of about N11 billion. The commission said it detected suspicious transactions and froze the account to prevent further movement of funds while its investigation continued.

Following the development, Tinubu directed the EFCC to return to court and seek the lifting of the restriction. The President reportedly expressed concern that the timing of the action could create the impression that a federal agency was being used to interfere in the Osun governorship election.

Speaking on Television on Sunday, Adeleke said Tinubu was not aware of most of the issues involving federal agencies.

“The President is not aware of most of these matters. He has numerous foreign responsibilities and tasks to attend to,” the governor said.

Adeleke also disclosed that some members of his administration had been invited by the EFCC for questioning but were released after their interrogation.

He said he encouraged his officials to cooperate with the investigation because they had nothing to hide.

The governor questioned the decision to summon his spokesperson, arguing that the official was not responsible for managing the state’s finances.

Adeleke described the invitations and other actions as distractions, alleging that Oyetola was using his relationship with Tinubu to influence developments in the state.

He said he was convinced that the President was not aware of the EFCC’s action, noting that Tinubu’s intervention after he became aware of the matter was evidence of this.

Adeleke was re-elected as Osun governor, securing 511,067 votes against the 444,815 votes recorded by the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.

The governor won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in the remaining 11.
