A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abdulsamad Jamiu, has been killed in a crossfire during a security operation responding to an armed robbery incident in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 25 at Shagari Estate in Dei-Dei, involved troops of the Guards Brigade’s Quick Response Group who were on routine night patrol.
According to a statement issued by the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade, soldiers responded to a distress call reporting an ongoing robbery attack in the area.

Upon arrival, the troops reportedly came under heavy gunfire from fleeing suspects, leading to what officials described as a “brief but intense exchange.” During the confrontation, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire.
Despite efforts by the troops to secure the area and provide assistance, the young corps member succumbed to his injuries, casting what the Brigade described as a “deep shadow” over its personnel.
Military authorities said preliminary findings suggest the situation was “fluid and highly volatile,” as troops attempted to repel the attackers while safeguarding residents.
The Commander of the Guards Brigade extended condolences to the victim’s family, the NYSC community, and others affected by the incident, expressing solidarity during what he termed a period of “profound sorrow.”
Authorities confirmed that Jamiu’s remains have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to the appropriate civil authorities.
The Brigade has launched a full investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident, pledging transparency and accountability in its findings.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Guards Brigade stated it remains committed to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory and will review its operational procedures to enhance civilian safety.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts intensify to curb criminal activities in the area.
