Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, a $1,999 device designed to transform its flagship iPhone lineup and compete with rivals that have dominated the foldable category for years.

The new smartphone, described as passport-shaped with rounded edges, opens into a large 7.6-inch display while featuring a smaller outer screen when folded. Apple said the design combines portability with expanded screen space for productivity, entertainment and multitasking.

The launch represents Apple’s biggest redesign of the iPhone in years as the company seeks to challenge established foldable phone makers, including Samsung and Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei.

Apple is banking on its hardware design, software integration and focus on user privacy to attract consumers in a market where foldable devices have struggled to move beyond a niche audience.

The iPhone Duo features Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, a redesigned hinge system and dual displays aimed at improving the user experience. The company said the device supports advanced multitasking features and is built to deliver strong performance despite its foldable form factor.

The launch event also marked the first major product presentation under new Apple Chief Executive Officer John Ternus, who is expected to lead the company into a new phase of hardware and artificial intelligence development.

Analysts believe Apple’s entry could accelerate adoption of foldable smartphones globally, with the company’s strong ecosystem potentially helping the category gain wider acceptance among mainstream users.

The iPhone Duo is expected to be available for pre-order from October 16, 2026, with sales beginning on October 23, 2026.
