The Governor of Ogun State, Mr Dapo Abiodun, has said state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should account for how the financial gains from the removal of the petrol subsidy are being utilised in their respective Local government areas and states.
Mr Abiodun made the remarks recently at an All Progressives Congress rally held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.
Speaking in Yoruba, the governor argued that state governments were better positioned to explain how the additional revenue had been spent because they receive increased allocations following the subsidy removal.
According to him, the funds had supported infrastructure and various intervention programmes across the states.
Abiodun cited the construction of roads, schools, housing projects and an airport, as well as incentives for farmers, as some of the initiatives funded through increased government revenues.
His comments come amid renewed debate over the use of the savings and additional revenue generated following the Federal Government’s decision to end petrol subsidy in 2023.
Opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have repeatedly demanded greater transparency and accountability over the funds.
The Tinubu administration has defended the subsidy removal, maintaining that it has freed resources previously used to keep petrol prices artificially low.
The Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, said in August that the removal of the subsidy saved the federation N15.8tn between June 2023 and December 2025.
Abiodun also expressed confidence that the APC would defeat opposition parties in the 2027 general elections.
