The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abia State Council, has urged politicians and their supporters to avoid hate speech, inflammatory comments and violence capable of threatening peace and security in the state.
The union made the call in a communique issued after its monthly congress at the NUJ Press Centre in Umuahia.
Signed by the council chairman, Chidi Asonye, and Secretary, Ikechukwu Onuegbu, the communique urged political actors to focus on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NUJ also expressed concern over reports of criminal activities in parts of Umuahia, Aba and other communities, warning that the alleged involvement of youths in crime could pose a threat to public safety.
It called on security agencies and community leaders to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering and enforcement to tackle emerging security challenges.
The journalists commended the Abia State Government for beginning the payment of gratuities to pensioners but urged the government to sustain the initiative.
The council also raised concerns over what it described as exorbitant estimated electricity bills being imposed on consumers in Umuahia and neighbouring areas, calling for urgent government intervention.
