Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has directed the immediate dissolution of all ad hoc committees of the lower chamber.
The directive, which took effect on Friday, August 28, 2026, brings the activities of the affected committees to an end.
The decision was conveyed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, and addressed to chairmen and members of the committees.
According to the clerk, the Speaker ordered the dissolution following the expiration of the deadline earlier given to the committees to complete their assignments and submit their reports.
The statement said the House had previously instructed the committees to conclude their respective mandates within specified periods.
Ibrahim explained that only two of the committees had requested additional time to complete their assignments and were granted a two-week extension.
He said the extension had also expired, leaving no justification for the continued existence of the committees.
The clerk reminded lawmakers that ad hoc committees were established as temporary bodies to handle specific assignments within defined periods.
He said they were not designed to continue operating indefinitely after the completion or expiration of their mandates.
Ibrahim cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the Standing Orders of the House, which provides for limitations on the time allowed for committees to submit reports.
He said the affected committees had exceeded the periods approved for their assignments, making their continued operation untenable.
“Having exceeded the time allotted, the continued existence of the ad hoc committees is no longer tenable,” the clerk said.
Consequently, the House ordered an immediate halt to all activities being undertaken in the name of the dissolved committees.
The affected chairmen were also directed to submit outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the office of the Clerk of the House for safekeeping.
