A coalition of civil servants, artisans, traders and other workers operating under the umbrella of Working People United (WoPU) has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group also announced a partnership with the City Boy Movement to mobilise grassroots support for the President across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The endorsement was announced on Wednesday in Abuja by the FCT Coordinator of Working People United, Comrade Musa Istiphanus Fadawa, during a press briefing attended by members of the movement.

Fadawa explained that the group comprises teachers, nurses, drivers, artisans, traders, civil servants, students and private-sector workers.

According to him, the decision followed consultations with members across the FCT and other parts of the country.

He said the movement’s support was informed by what it described as the Tinubu administration’s engagement with organised labour, workers’ welfare initiatives and infrastructure development.

Fadawa cited the approval of wage awards and the new national minimum wage as examples of government policies that influenced the group’s position.

He also commended the administration’s engagement with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), maintaining that dialogue remained important in addressing workers’ concerns.

On infrastructure, Fadawa praised the administration of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, citing road construction, rehabilitation projects, street lighting, school renovations and improvements in public facilities.

He claimed that these developments had contributed to employment opportunities, transportation improvements and commercial activities across the territory.

Addressing national economic policies, the coordinator defended the removal of petrol subsidies and foreign exchange reforms, describing them as difficult decisions intended to strengthen the economy.

However, he acknowledged the hardship associated with the reforms and called for additional measures to reduce inflation, strengthen the naira and improve living conditions.

Fadawa also identified the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, youth empowerment initiatives and skills development programmes as policies the movement considered important.

As part of its political activities, Working People United said it would collaborate with the City Boy Movement to organise campaigns in markets, motor parks, workplaces, communities and satellite towns.

The coalition also pledged to encourage eligible voters to register, obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate in the 2027 elections.

The endorsement comes as political groups intensify mobilisation ahead of the presidential election.

Although Working People United says its membership cuts across several professions, its endorsement represents the position of the movement and should not be interpreted as a collective declaration by all FCT civil servants or Nigeria’s organised labour unions.
