The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has unveiled a five-point strategy aimed at engaging Nigerians living abroad as part of preparations for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative was announced on Wednesday during the activation of the council’s Diaspora Mobilisation Directorate in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Diaspora Mobilisation and Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the strategy would strengthen political engagement with Nigerians across different continents.

According to her, the programme would involve activating APC chapters abroad, expanding digital communication, coordinating campaign-related activities, encouraging voter registration awareness and responding to misinformation.

She explained that the campaign council intended to engage both registered APC supporters and other Nigerians living overseas who had expressed interest in participating in political activities.

The directorate plans to coordinate party chapters in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Australia and India.

A major component of the initiative is a digital communication programme tagged Operation Tell Your Home Story.

Under the programme, participating Nigerians abroad would receive videos, infographics and other materials presenting the Tinubu administration’s policies and achievements.

Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged that Nigerians living overseas currently lack the legal framework to vote from their countries of residence in Nigerian elections.

She said the campaign would instead focus partly on their connections with eligible voters at home.

On campaign financing, she emphasised the importance of transparency and compliance with applicable laws while discussing possible support for political activities, voter education and community engagement.

Nigeria’s Constitution prohibits political parties from retaining funds remitted from outside the country, making compliance with campaign finance regulations an important consideration.

The directorate also announced plans to establish a mechanism for responding to misinformation concerning government policies, economic reforms and the country’s investment environment.

Addressing the continuing debate about financial support from Nigerians abroad, Dabiri-Erewa urged diaspora communities to maintain their relationships with relatives at home.

She defended the administration’s foreign exchange reforms and petrol subsidy removal, describing them as difficult but necessary decisions intended to improve economic stability.

Her comments followed a public disagreement over remarks attributed to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi concerning the financial dependence of Nigerian families on relatives abroad.

Obi had clarified that he was not asking Nigerians overseas to stop supporting their families but was advocating improved economic opportunities within Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the APC Presidential Campaign Council, inaugurated on October 14, is preparing for its campaign launch scheduled for Saturday, October 24, in Kaduna State.

Former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari serves as Director-General of the council, which is coordinating the ruling party’s nationwide campaign preparations.
